Not sure if you had Cliff's Digi-painting class, but one of the most useful tips he gave us " warm side, cool side, detail in the focal point" warm up the highlights and cool down the shadows Also while painting throw a hue/sat adjustment layer over it , then desaturate it. You'll be able to see if you have enough contrast and make sure that your colors aren't all the same tone.
